About Yo-Yo Ma
Yo‑Yo Ma is a celebrated French-born American cellist regarded as one of the most influential musicians of his generation. He was born in Paris in 1955 to Chinese parents and began learning the cello from his father at the tender age of four, performing for U.S. President John F. Kennedy by age seven and giving his New York debut at Carnegie Hall by fifteen
A child prodigy, Ma trained at the Juilliard School under Leonard Rose and later graduated with a liberal arts degree from Harvard in 1976. He launched a prolific recording career spanning more than 120 albums — many of them acclaimed — and has earned nineteen Grammy Awards for his performances across a broad range of styles, from the classical canon to folk, Argentine tango, and even American bluegrass.
Ma has consistently pushed musical boundaries through innovative collaborations. Highlights include projects like The Goat Rodeo Sessions, where he blends classical cello with bluegrass musicians, and the Silkroad Ensemble, a multicultural arts collective he founded to foster global artistic exchange. His artistry and humanitarian efforts have earned him numerous prestigious honors, including the Avery Fisher Prize, the National Medal of Arts, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and Kennedy Center Honors, among others.
A United Nations Messenger of Peace since 2006, Yo‑Yo Ma views music as a bridge between cultures, a source of healing, and a means to build community — philosophies he continues to champion through performance, outreach, and conversation.
