ABOUT: Thundercat (real name Stephen Lee Bruner) is a Grammy-winning bassist, singer, songwriter, and producer from Los Angeles, celebrated for his genre-blending style that fuses funk, jazz, R&B, soul, and electronic music. Born on October 19, 1984, into a family of musicians, Bruner first made a name for himself as a sought-after session and touring bassist, performing with artists like Suicidal Tendencies, Erykah Badu, and Snoop Dogg before stepping into the spotlight as a solo artist.
He gained widespread recognition for his virtuosic bass playing, silky falsetto vocals, and quirky sense of humor, both in his music and public persona. His breakthrough album, Drunk (2017), featured hits like “Them Changes” and showcased collaborations with Kendrick Lamar, Pharrell, and Flying Lotus. Thundercat’s earlier work, including The Golden Age of Apocalypse (2011) and Apocalypse (2013), cemented his reputation as a visionary artist unafraid to mix complex musicianship with playful, heartfelt songwriting. His most recent album, It Is What It Is (2020), won the Grammy Award for Best Progressive R&B Album and included collaborations with Childish Gambino, Ty Dolla $ign, and Steve Lacy.
Beyond his solo career, Thundercat has been a key contributor to major projects like Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp a Butterfly, Mac Miller’s Swimming, and numerous Flying Lotus records. Known for his vibrant stage presence — often performing in eclectic outfits and delivering intricate bass lines with ease — he’s become one of the most distinctive and influential musicians in modern music.
