About The Florida Orchestra
The Florida Orchestra (TFO) began its journey in 1968, formed by the merger of the Tampa Philharmonic and the St. Petersburg Symphony — a union symbolically celebrated on a boat in the middle of Tampa Bay before becoming official two years later. Originally known as the Florida Gulf Coast Symphony, the ensemble adopted its current name in 1984 and quickly established itself as a cultural cornerstone across Tampa Bay.
Guided by Michael Francis as Music Director, TFO has grown into a dynamic force in Florida’s music scene. It offers nearly 100 performances annually across Tampa, St. Petersburg, and Clearwater, featuring diverse concert series — including Masterworks, Pops, coffee concerts, rock concerts, youth programs, and the popular Pops in the Park.
TFO stands out not just for its musical excellence, but for its deeply rooted community presence. It was the first American orchestra to perform live at a Super Bowl, accompanying Whitney Houston’s iconic rendition of the national anthem at Super Bowl XXV. Its innovative outreach extends to cultural exchanges with Cuba, youth education, and accessibility programs that make orchestral music more inclusive and meaningful within the Tampa Bay region.
