ABOUT: The Book of Mormon is a satirical musical created by Trey Parker, Robert Lopez, and Matt Stone — the minds behind South Park and Avenue Q. It premiered on Broadway in 2011 and quickly became a massive hit for its sharp humor, memorable songs, and fearless approach to religious and cultural commentary.
The story follows two young Mormon missionaries, Elder Price and Elder Cunningham, who are sent to a remote village in Uganda to spread the teachings of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. While Elder Price is ambitious and self-assured, Elder Cunningham is awkward and prone to embellishing the faith’s stories. When they arrive, they’re faced with harsh realities — poverty, disease, and a community more concerned with survival than conversion.
The show cleverly plays with religious themes, mixing sincere moments with biting comedy. Its songs like “Hello!,” “I Believe,” and “Hasa Diga Eebowai” walk a tightrope between satire and heart, poking fun while also highlighting human resilience and belief.
The Book of Mormon has earned critical acclaim and commercial success, winning nine Tony Awards, including Best Musical. It’s known for its boldness, but beneath the irreverence is a core of empathy and commentary about belief, storytelling, and the clash of cultures.
It’s not a show for everyone — it’s explicit and pulls no punches — but for many, it’s a daring and wildly entertaining experience that redefines what a musical can do.
