ABOUT: Judas Priest is a seminal English heavy metal band formed in Birmingham in 1969. Known for helping define the heavy metal genre, the band is often credited with influencing generations of metal musicians through their twin-guitar attack, operatic vocals, and leather-and-studs aesthetic. The original incarnation of Judas Priest was founded by guitarist K.K. Downing and bassist Ian Hill. After several lineup changes, the classic lineup solidified in the mid-1970s with the addition of vocalist Rob Halford, guitarist Glenn Tipton, and drummer Les Binks. This lineup marked the beginning of the band’s golden era.
Judas Priest gained traction with albums like Sad Wings of Destiny (1976), Sin After Sin (1977), and Stained Class (1978), showcasing a harder, faster sound. Their breakthrough came with British Steel (1980), featuring iconic tracks such as “Breaking the Law” and “Living After Midnight.” Throughout the 1980s, the band continued to dominate the metal scene with albums like Screaming for Vengeance (1982), Defenders of the Faith (1984), and Turbo (1986). Halford’s soaring vocals and the guitar duo of Downing and Tipton became a hallmark of the band’s sound.
In 1992, Halford left the band to pursue other musical projects. He was replaced by Tim “Ripper” Owens, who fronted the band on Jugulator (1997) and Demolition (2001). While these albums received mixed reviews, they kept the Judas Priest name alive. Halford returned in 2003, reuniting the classic lineup (minus Binks). The band released Angel of Retribution (2005), widely praised as a return to form. In 2011, Downing retired and was replaced by guitarist Richie Faulkner.
Judas Priest has continued to release music and tour into the 2025s. Their 2018 album Firepower received critical acclaim and reaffirmed their status as metal icons. The band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2022. Judas Priest’s influence on metal is immeasurable. With a career spanning over five decades, they remain one of the genre’s most enduring and respected acts.
