ABOUT: Algernon Cadwallader is a cult-favorite emo band from Philadelphia, known for their intricate guitar work, shouted vocals, and emotionally charged lyrics. Formed in the mid-2000s by childhood friends Peter Helmis, Joe Reinhart, and Colin Mahony, the band became a cornerstone of the 2000s emo revival, blending math rock complexity with the heart-on-sleeve ethos of classic emo.
Their sound is often compared to Cap’n Jazz, but Algernon carved their own lane with winding, interlocking guitar riffs and raw, unfiltered vocal deliveries. Songs like “Spit Fountain,” “Some Kind of Cadwallader,” and “Look Down (Because the Ground is Easier to Understand and Doesn’t Take So Much Work to Figure Out But We All Hurt Anyway)” became underground anthems. Though they were largely DIY, their music spread fast through word of mouth, house shows, and internet forums.
The band originally disbanded in 2012 after two full-length albums and a handful of EPs, but they reunited in 2022 to overwhelming fan support. In 2025, they’re releasing their first new album in 14 years, titled Trying Not to Have a Thought, and launching a full North American tour to support it.
