SEASON PREVIEW: Looking to bounce back from back-to-back Stanley Cup Final losses, the Oilers enter 2025–26 under head coach Kris Knoblauch, who emphasizes early cohesion amid a tough opening schedule and quick transitions between road trips and home stands. General manager Stan Bowman has signaled a shift toward youth, entrusting forward Matt Savoie with a bigger role — especially on the penalty kill — after several veterans moved on this offseason. Meanwhile, whispers about a potential goaltending upgrade and trade talks involving Stuart Skinner signal management’s intent to solidify that position, while all eyes are on Connor McDavid, entering the final year of his contract amid growing speculation about his next move. As the team balances a win-now mentality with long-term planning, they face pressure to deepen forward scoring — potentially targeting veterans like Jonathan Marchessault — and build a stable defensive core around stars such as McDavid and Leon Draisaitl.

ABOUT EDMONTON OILERS: The Edmonton Oilers are a professional ice hockey team based in Edmonton, Alberta, competing in the NHL’s Pacific Division of the Western Conference. They were founded in 1971 as part of the World Hockey Association (WHA) and joined the NHL in 1979. The team plays its home games at Rogers Place, a state-of-the-art arena in downtown Edmonton. The Oilers have a storied history and are one of the most iconic franchises in hockey, thanks largely to their dynasty years in the 1980s.
The Oilers rose to prominence behind a core of Hall of Famers, including Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messier, Paul Coffey, Jari Kurri, and Grant Fuhr. Between 1984 and 1990, Edmonton won five Stanley Cups, cementing its legacy as one of the greatest teams in league history. After Gretzky’s departure in 1988 and the gradual breakup of their core, the team experienced stretches of mediocrity and rebuilds. However, in recent years, the Oilers have returned to prominence behind modern-day superstars Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl.
As of the 2025–26 season, the Oilers are in a critical moment. After back-to-back Stanley Cup Final losses, the team is adjusting under head coach Kris Knoblauch and general manager Stan Bowman. McDavid, arguably the best player in the world, is entering the final year of his contract, adding urgency to the team’s push for a championship. The team has focused on depth scoring, developing young talent like Matt Savoie, and shoring up its goaltending. With a potent offense, elite top-line talent, and a fan base desperate for another championship, the Oilers are once again a high-stakes contender in the Western Conference.
