About Black Violin

Black Violin is a genre-defying duo composed of violinist Kev Marcus (Kevin Sylvester) and violist Wil B (Wilner Baptiste). Both classically trained musicians, they met in a South Florida high school orchestra program and went on to study music at Florida State and Florida International University. Together, they created a sound that fuses classical technique with hip-hop beats, R&B, funk, and pop, redefining the possibilities of what string instruments can do in modern music.

The duo gained national recognition after winning Showtime at the Apollo in 2005, which led to television appearances, collaborations with major artists, and performances alongside Alicia Keys, Wu-Tang Clan, and Mike Shinoda of Linkin Park. Over the years, Black Violin has released multiple albums including Stereotypes (2015), which earned acclaim for tackling themes of race and identity, and Take the Stairs (2019), which received a Grammy nomination for Best Contemporary Instrumental Album. Their music has also been featured in commercials, sports broadcasts, and educational programming, amplifying their influence beyond the concert stage.

Beyond performance, Black Violin has dedicated much of their career to music education and advocacy. Through their nonprofit Black Violin Foundation, they provide scholarships, mentorship, and outreach programs aimed at young musicians, particularly those from underrepresented communities. Their mission is to challenge stereotypes about race and genre while inspiring the next generation to embrace creativity and persistence. By bridging classical tradition and contemporary culture, Black Violin has become both a celebrated musical act and a powerful cultural voice promoting inclusivity and artistic possibility.
