Mark Twain Tonight! 2025-26 Tour Info

Emmy Award–winning actor Richard Thomas brings the celebrated one-man show Mark Twain Tonight! to life in a new national tour throughout fall 2025 and into early 2026. This iconic performance — originally written and performed by Hal Holbrook — features Richard Thomas as the only actor authorized to step into Twain’s shoes, delivering a sharp and humorous portrait of America’s greatest comic genius through Twain’s own wit and writings.

The tour opens with a limited engagement at TheaterWorks Hartford from August 12 to 24, 2025, where Thomas’s portrayal of Twain is already being praised for its warmth, humor, and authenticity. Following Hartford, the tour moves across the country with performances scheduled in cities such as Ocean City, MD; Cedar Falls, IA; Little Rock, AR; Springfield, MO; Washington, DC; Durham, NC; Wilmington, NC; Manhattan, KS; Elmira, NY; New Brunswick, NJ; Amherst, MA; Logan, UT; Provo, UT; Modesto, CA; Mesa, AZ; Huntington, WV; Huntsville, AL; Binghamton, NY; Sarasota, FL; and into early 2026 with stops in Orange, TX; Tyler, TX; Fayetteville, AR; and Fort Worth, TX.

Each performance is a 90-minute solo spotlight in which Thomas channels Twain’s irreverent humor, social commentary, and reflective insight — a style Time Magazine has described as “uproariously funny” and “pungently wise.” As the nation marks the 60th anniversary of the show’s original Broadway premiere, audiences will witness a timeless theatrical tradition reawakened by a master storyteller.

Thomas calls Twain a mirror of America — full of contradictions, humor, and humanity — and the tour, curated with minimal staging to highlight local theatrical roots, invites communities across the country to experience that reflection live.

About Mark Twain Tonight!

Mark Twain Tonight! is a legendary one-man stage production that brings the wit, satire, and spirit of Mark Twain — America’s original literary humorist — to life using his own words. Originally conceived and performed by Hal Holbrook in 1954, the show became an enduring piece of American theater, running for over six decades and earning Holbrook a Tony Award in 1966, as well as an Emmy for the televised version. Holbrook portrayed Twain well into his 90s, making it one of the longest-running one-man shows in history.

The performance is drawn entirely from Twain’s essays, lectures, and books, delivered in Twain’s distinctive voice with a razor-sharp sense of timing and irony. Topics range from politics and religion to war, hypocrisy, and the everyday absurdities of American life — many of which remain shockingly relevant today. The format is intimate: one actor, minimal set, and Twain’s words as the star.

After Hal Holbrook’s retirement and passing, the production was entrusted to Richard Thomas, a veteran stage and screen actor best known for The Waltons and acclaimed theatrical work. Thomas is the only performer officially authorized to carry on Holbrook’s legacy in the role of Twain, approaching the character not as imitation, but as interpretation — infusing the material with reverence, spontaneity, and a personal connection to Twain’s enduring voice.

Mark Twain Tonight! is more than a historical reenactment — it’s a living tribute to the power of language, satire, and the uniquely American tradition of speaking truth through laughter.
