ABOUT: Formed in Reykjavík in 1994, Sigur Rós quickly gained international acclaim for their atmospheric compositions that blend classical and ambient elements with rock instrumentation. The founding members included Jónsi, bassist Georg Hólm, and drummer Ágúst Ævar Gunnarsson. Keyboardist Kjartan Sveinsson joined in 1998, contributing to the lush textures that would define the band’s signature sound. Ágúst left the band after the release of their debut album Von (1997) and was replaced by Orri Páll Dýrason. Sigur Rós broke through internationally with their second album, Ágætis byrjun (1999), praised for its beauty and innovation.

The band continued to gain recognition with albums such as ( ) (2002), which featured lyrics in “Hopelandic” (a non-literal language created by Jónsi), Takk… (2005), and Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust (2008), which introduced more acoustic and accessible elements. After a brief hiatus, Sigur Rós returned with Valtari (2012) and Kveikur (2013), showcasing a darker, more industrial tone. Following Kjartan’s departure and Orri’s exit in 2018, the band continued as a trio. Kjartan rejoined in 2022, and in 2023, Sigur Rós released Átta, their first studio album in a decade.

Sigur Rós is widely regarded as one of the most influential post-rock bands of the 21st century, known for their cinematic music, emotional depth, and innovative artistry.
