Event Details
Maybe Happy Ending is a contemporary musical with music by Will Aronson and lyrics and book by Hue Park and Aronson, telling a tender, futuristic love story through the experiences of two humanoid helper-robots. Set in a near-future version of Seoul, the narrative follows Oliver and Claire, two obsolete “helperbots” who have been retired and left behind by their human owners. Their chance encounter in a shared apartment leads to an unexpected friendship and, ultimately, a profound connection that explores what it means to love, live and be alive — even for artificial beings.
Originally premiered in South Korea in 2016, Maybe Happy Ending gained international attention with productions across Asia before making its way to Broadway, where it opened to critical acclaim. Directed by Tony Award winner Michael Arden, the musical has won multiple Tony Awards, including Best Musical and Best Direction, and been praised for its inventive staging, heartfelt score and emotionally resonant storytelling.
At its core, Maybe Happy Ending is both a romantic tale and a thoughtful reflection on connection and mortality. Through the offbeat yet deeply human journey of Oliver and Claire — played in early Broadway runs by Darren Criss and Helen J. Shen — the show blends humor, poignancy and spectacle, inviting audiences to consider the universality of longing and hope in a world where even robots dream of love.
