ABOUT: Dream Theater was formed in 1985 by guitarist John Petrucci, bassist John Myung, and drummer Mike Portnoy while they were students at Berklee College of Music in Boston. Originally named Majesty, the band later changed its name to Dream Theater after discovering another band already had the rights to their original moniker.
The band quickly gained attention for their technical proficiency and complex compositions, blending elements of metal, progressive rock, and classical music. They released their debut album, When Dream and Day Unite, in 1989 with vocalist Charlie Dominici. However, it wasn’t until the release of their second album, Images and Words (1992), featuring new vocalist James LaBrie, that they achieved commercial success. The single “Pull Me Under” became a surprise hit and remains one of their most recognizable songs.
The band continued to build a dedicated fan base with albums like Awake (1994), Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory (1999), and Train of Thought (2003), each showcasing their evolving sound and musicianship. In 2010, founding drummer Mike Portnoy departed the band and was replaced by Mike Mangini, whose arrival marked a new chapter for Dream Theater. Albums such as A Dramatic Turn of Events (2011), Dream Theater (2013), and Distance Over Time (2019) received critical acclaim and continued the band’s legacy of pushing musical boundaries. Dream Theater’s 15th studio album, A View from the Top of the World, was released in 2021 and won the band their first Grammy Award in 2022 for Best Metal Performance for the song “The Alien.”
