About Dark Star Orchestra
Dark Star Orchestra (DSO) has become one of the most respected tribute bands in the world, known for meticulously recreating the music and live experience of the Grateful Dead. Formed in Chicago in 1997, the group set out to capture the sound, energy, and improvisational spirit of the original band. Rather than offering a loose homage, DSO distinguishes itself by performing complete Grateful Dead setlists — often song for song, note for note, from historic shows — while also blending in their own interpretations to keep the performances fresh and alive.
The band’s lineup features seasoned musicians deeply versed in the Dead’s catalog, including guitarist Jeff Mattson, keyboardist Rob Barraco, bassist Skip Vangelas, drummer Rob Koritz, and guitarist Rob Eaton. Collectively, they deliver performances that transport fans back to the magic of the Dead’s heyday, complete with rich harmonies, extended jams, and vintage gear that replicates the tones of Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, and other Grateful Dead members. Their dedication has earned them a loyal following and the respect of original Dead members, several of whom — like Bob Weir and Phil Lesh — have joined DSO on stage.
Over the decades, Dark Star Orchestra has played more than 3,000 shows across the United States and abroad, becoming a cornerstone of the jam-band and festival scenes. They are frequent headliners at events celebrating improvisational rock, and their performances have been praised not just as tribute shows, but as immersive musical journeys that honor the Grateful Dead’s legacy while introducing new generations to the music. Through this blend of authenticity, virtuosity, and passion, DSO has cemented itself as the premier Grateful Dead experience for fans who crave both historical accuracy and the thrill of live improvisation.
