ABOUT: Back to the Future: The Musical is a stage adaptation of the beloved 1985 sci-fi comedy film Back to the Future, created by the movie’s original writer Bob Gale with music and lyrics by Alan Silvestri (who composed the original film score) and Glen Ballard. It takes the iconic story of Marty McFly, Doc Brown, and their time-traveling DeLorean and brings it to life in a theatrical format packed with new songs, spectacular effects, and plenty of 1980s nostalgia.
The musical closely follows the plot of the first film: teenager Marty McFly is accidentally sent back to 1955 in a DeLorean-turned-time-machine invented by eccentric scientist Doc Brown. Stuck in the past, Marty must find a way back to the future while making sure his teenage parents fall in love — or risk erasing his own existence. Fans of the movie will recognize famous moments and lines, alongside new musical numbers that expand on the characters and story.
The show premiered in 2020 at the Manchester Opera House in England before transferring to London’s West End in 2021, where it won the Olivier Award for Best New Musical. Its Broadway run began in 2023 at the Winter Garden Theatre in New York, earning praise for its high-tech staging, dazzling projections, and an onstage DeLorean that appears to drive, fly, and time-travel right before the audience’s eyes.
